Hey Rube, Hunter S. Thompson

This book is a collection of the work he did as a weekly columnist with espn.com that he did from 2000-2003. Yes, this weekly column “Hey Rube” did challenge many conventions known to sports, the internet, writing, and editing at that time, but this is not his best work. He touches on all things NNBA, NFL, major league, the 200 election, and various other observations plaguing America at that time.

He wrote these columns later in life (he killed himself less than 2 years later in Feb of 2005), so if you’re looking for true “Gonzo journalism” with Hunter at his best… this aint it. It’s organic in the sense the work is unchecked, clever at times, and a bit saucy, though again, look at his previous writings. By this time the effects of drugs and alcohol had taken a strong toll on the man. It’s interesting though, you can still see the genius behind the words if you look closely… It just, though, appears in a fog that can’t seem to clear.
